Nursery – Examples of teaching strategies and methods that are used:

• reading area
• print in all areas & role-play areas.
• daily story
• made books
• story re-telling
• name cards
• heard 1:1 reading with either  the Learning Support Assistant or Class Teacher when the children are ready
• Guided Reading once a week – Summer Term

 

Reception – Examples of teaching strategies and methods that are used:

• sharing a big book/story
• reading, writing and listening area
• heard 1:1 reading with either teaching assistant or class teacher
• print in the role-play areas
• daily story
• made books
• story re-telling
• name cards
• high frequency words
• twice a week the guided reading book goes home and also a school library book
• liaison book with parents so teachers and parents can comment on child’s progress
• Guided Reading once a week

Reading in Year 1 and Year 2

 

When is reading taught?

• whole class teaching in the literacy lesson
• guided and group reading
• individual reading with teacher/parent/students
• paired reading
• silent reading and reading related activities
• reading comprehension

 

Children take a reading scheme book home at least three times a week to share with their parents. Accompanying this is a home reading record book for liaison between the parent, child & teacher.  This includes child friendly targets that the children are aware of. They also take a library book home once a week.

 

What resources are used to teach reading?

• reading schemes – books are graded according to their level of difficulty and pupils progress up through the reading schemes on an individual basis
• non reading scheme books – there is a range of story books and non-fiction books for children to read at school and to take home
• big books – these are used as the basis of teaching in the literacy hour and the school has a wide range of fiction and non-fiction big books in different genres
• word and sentence level games and activities– these are used to teach children how to read words and sentences using a variety of strategies
• ICT – Word Shark & books on the computer

 

How are children taught to read?

The teaching of reading in Key Stage 1 is based on the model of synthetic phonics called Letters and Sounds and is used throughout the EYFS and KS1. The children are split into ability groups and are taught the phonic phase that is relevant to them and then move into the next phonic phase accordingly.

The teaching of reading in Key Stage 1 is based on the model of four ‘Searchlights’:

• phonic knowledge
• knowledge of context
• word recognition and graphic knowledge
• grammatical knowledge

Other Methods:

• reading areas in classrooms
• library
• ICT books on the computer
• awareness of their own targets
• small group language activities
